Typographic treatment in film is commonly formed throughout opening title sequences. They engage the audience by conveying an underlying tone. Type has an integral role in moving image, exemplified by Kubrick’s classic ‘Dr. Strangelove’, Greenberg’s intriguingly formed ‘Alien’ sequence and R/Ga’s experimental ‘Se7en’ sequence which itself is a beautiful example of deconstructionism, somewhat reminiscent to the work of postmodernist David Carson.
Beyond these beautiful examples of typographic sequences that convey tone there is another question to be asked. How do you visualise text messaging? Even though we’re well into a digital age, moving image is still an ineffective method of depicting the world we live in. The short film ‘A Brief Look at Texting and the Internet in Film’ answers this question, that the solution lies not in content, but in form.
